The Walker Collection:
Maps of Asia Minor and the Middle East, 1511-1774
The Ronald and Pamela Walker Collection of Maps of Asia Minor was
donated to the University of
Melbourne Library in 1991 and is held in the Library's Map Collection. The
Collection comprises 135
original historic maps, printed between 1511 and 1774 and covering Asia Minor
and surround areas
including the Mediterranean, the Middle East and the Balkans. The maps are
examples of the work
of the finest Cartographers of Renaissance Europe. As well as representing
significant landmarks of
map making, many of them are works of art in their own right, with magnificent
ornamentation and
beautiful colouring.
The Walker Collection is unusual in that it covers a part of the
world, Asia Minor and the Middle East,
that is poorly represented in the collections of Western Institutions and
where little material is available
in digital form. All 135 maps comprising the collection can be viewed online.
